Environment Day Celebrations

Environment day provides a global platform to raise awareness and inspire action towards environmental protection. As a part of Environment Day celebrations, Abhaya – The Womens’ Forum of St Agnes PU College organized a talk for the students on ‘Nature our Future’ on 13 June in the college auditorium.

The programme began with a prayer song invoking God’s blessings. The resource person for the day, Mr Antony S Mariyappa, IFS, Deputy Conservator of Forest, Mangalore Division gave pointers on how to reduce carbon footprints on our planet. He explained how deforestation, concretisation and mindless development have led to soil run off thus preventing the absorption of water. He also dispelled the myth people in the cities have that water comes out of a tap.

He raised awareness about the importance of nature conservation and emphasised the need to take different measures to preserve, protect and restore our ecosystems. He encouraged the students to be a part of the change in making a greener earth by planting saplings, using electricity judiciously, installing solar panels, conserving water using public transport and most importantly by reducing the amount of waste generation in our everyday lives, reusing things more than once and by recycling. He emphasised that even though these steps may seem small they create a massive impact on our environment and help improve its condition. He said that this is a crucial time when we should try and reverse the damage done to our Mother Earth before it is too late.

Raina Lobo welcomed the gathering while Dhanya proposed the vote of thanks. The programme was compered by Nahla and keerthana gave insights on the significance of the day. A captivating dance performance by Bhuvashree and group depicting the five elements of nature added colour to the programme.

The Vice Principal, Sr Janet Sequeira, the convener of Abhaya, Dr Tressie Menezes, faculty and students were present for the programme.
